Michiel Claassen studied Constitutional and Administrative Law as well as International Law at Leiden University and at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. In 2001, Michiel was admitted to the Bar in The Hague, where he began his career as a lawyer at the office of the State Advocate. After completing his legal internship, Michiel transferred to the Financial Markets Department of the Dutch Ministry of Finance, where his portfolio included deposit guarantee schemes and financial infrastructure. Michiel also worked on the creation of the Financial Supervision Act (Wet op het financieel toezicht/Wft).

Michiel has been a lawyer at AKD since early 2007. He now works within the Regulatory and Governmental Affairs practice group in Rotterdam, where he primarily concentrates on financial legislation. This ranges from financial regulatory legislation - an interest he has retained from his early days at the Ministry of Finance - to the financing and funding of public education. In the field of financial regulation, Michiel assists financial service providers in relation to compliance issues: which rules are applicable, does the company comply with the rules, and if not, how can the company become compliant? He occasionally represents financial service providers in objection proceedings against De Nederlandse Bank (DNB) or the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). In relation to public finance, such as the state funding of education, Michiel assists in disputes or gives advice in relation to funding and decentralisation to both educational institutions and government organisations.

Furthermore, he helps businesses and government organisations in relation to issues connected with grant applications. For businesses, this often concerns assistance when applying for grants, or with objections/appeals against grant application refusals or subsidy repayment orders. Michiel is a member of the Securities Law Association (VVER) and the Administrative Law Association (VAR), he regularly publishes on financial law issues, and he is co-author of the SDU Commentaar Algemene wet bestuursrecht (General Administrative Law Commentary).
