Michiel Claassen graduated with a degree in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, going on to earn degrees in International Law at Leiden University and at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He was admitted to the Bar in The Hague in 2001, where he began his career as a lawyer in the office of the State Advocate. After completing his legal internship, Michiel transferred to the Financial Markets Department of the Dutch Ministry of Finance, where his portfolio included deposit guarantee schemes and financial infrastructure. Michiel was also involved in the creation of the Financial Supervision Act (Wet op het financieel toezicht/Wft).
Having joined AKD as a lawyer in early 2007, Michiel is currently a member of the Government and Business practice group, where he focuses mainly on general administrative/litigation law and the comprehensive field of environmental law. Michiel regularly counsels clients, and litigates on their behalf, in areas such as subsidy regulations, education law, administrative enforcement and government liability. He assists and supports governments, companies and private individuals.
Michiel, who publishes regularly on a wide range of subjects, is a member of the Administrative Law Association (Vereniging voor bestuursrecht/VAR) and of an association of Rotterdam-based lawyers specialising in environmental law. In addition, he is a member of the AKD Works Council. In 2009, Michiel successfully completed the specialised programme on the environment and spatial planning at the Grotius Institute for legal training.
