Huib Berendschot (1964) studied Dutch law at the University of Tilburg. He joined Unilever Nederland as a company lawyer in 1991. He became a member of the Corporate Trade Mark division of Unilever's Legal Department in Rotterdam. He worked for the same division in London from 1993 to 1997, and then moved back to the Legal Department in Rotterdam as head of the 15-strong Trademark team for Unilever's food and beverages business.

Huib represented Unilever in the Trade Mark Committee of the European Brands association, AIM, in Brussels. At the same time he represented the employers' organisation VNO-NCW in the Trade Mark and Design Committee of UNICE. He represented Unilever on the subject of counterfeiting prevention in the Business-IPR group of the World Customs Organisation. He was involved at Unilever in the legal aspects of brand development, international industrial property enforcement proceedings (including parallel trading) and the formulation of contracts concerning intellectual property (co-existence, design agreements, licenses, transfers, etc.). He was also involved in many of the mergers and takeovers that were conducted by Unilever between 1995 and 2001. In 2001 he moved to Novagraaf, a leading consultancy in the area of intellectual property.

He has been a member of the IP/ICT practice group of AKD as a lawyer since 1 May. He regularly teaches on the subject of trademark law and gives lectures at seminars both at home and abroad.

Huib is treasurer of the council of BBMM, a foundation for professional education of trade mark and design agents, member of the Trade Mark Team of Marques involving interaction with the Commission, OHIM and the national patent offices, teacher at BBMM, a foundation for professional education of trade mark and design agents and teacher at SBB, a foundation for professional education of inhouse counsels.
